BYRON (WIFR) -- Byron Generating Station will be hosting a community open house, Sunday, Oct. 21 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. in the station’s training building on plant property located at 4450 N. German Church Road, about four miles south of Byron, Ill.
“Nuclear power continues to be an important part of the carbon-free generation of electricity in the U.S.,” said Byron Station Vice President Tim Tulon. “Members of the public have the opportunity to visit with station employees and learn how we safely generate power, handle
used fuel and train a world-class organization.”
Employees will provide general information about station operations, environmental awareness, security, safety, and station enhancements made following last year’s event at the Fukushima nuclear facility in Japan.
Guests will also be able to tour the station’s control room simulator located in the training facility, which is where operator training is conducted.
Light refreshments will be served. Residents who have questions about the event or general questions about Byron Station and its outreach program can call (815) 406-3554. Due to security restrictions, the open house is limited to the plant’s training center. It will not include a tour inside the plant.
