BOONE COUNTY - Boone County residents can receive free water testing if they think their wells have been affected by flooding.
Sterile bottles to be filled and returned for analysis can be picked up at the Health Department, 1204 Logan Ave., Belvidere. Residents can also learn more about disinfecting wells. The Department urges residents to have water tested in private wells after flood waters have receded.
The Department also offers these recommendations to avoid health hazards due to flood contamination in wells:
- Stay clear of flood waters, especially when homes are served by individual septic systems. These are concerning because sewage can be released into the floodwater when submerged.
- If you've been exposed to the floodwater and have not received a tetanus shot within the last 10 years, go to your local health provider to get one.
- Do not drink from contaminated floodwater, including pets.
- If you become ill, call your local health provider. Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, muscle aches and fevers.
