UPDATE: The woman found dead in the Rock River has been identified as Katrina Smith.
UPDATE: BYRON (WIFR) -- After a woman's body is found in the Rock River, detectives say it could take more than a day to identify the woman.
They tell us an off-duty firefighter spotted the body at around 1:00 p.m. today.
Right now, the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department is stepping in to Ogle County's territory, because Katrina Smith is actively missing.
Investigators want to make sure, if the unidentified woman ends up being Smith, that they are a part of the investigation from the beginning.
To be clear, investigators have not identified the body at this time.
An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow. Ogle County detectives say they do not see any obvious signs of trauma, although they believe the woman has been in the water for a while considering she was covered in weeds and algae.
To identify the woman, investigators will start checking dental records and x-rays.
We will bring you the latest as more information becomes available.
BYRON (WIFR) -- A body has been found in the Rock River near the intersection of Route 2 and Townline Road, south of Byron.
We have been told that the body is a female. However, authorities at the scene say they are far from determining whether or not it is the body of the missing Machesney Park woman.
