SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Legislation prohibiting smoking on the campuses of Illinois public universities has passed the House..

The "Smoke Free Campus Act" is sponsored by state Democratic Sen. Terry Link of Waukegan and Democratic state Rep. Ann Williams of Chicago. It passed the chamber by a 67-44 vote Wednesday.

The legislation bans smoking in offices, dorms and outdoor areas at colleges and universities.

Smoking inside vehicles located on campus is not included in the ban.

Proponents of the law say it's a step in the right direction for public health. But opponents say it won't prompt smokers to quit.

The measure now heads to the Senate.

The legislation is SB2202
