Belvidere Fire Captain Retires After 33 Years

BELVIDERE (WIFR) -- After more than three decades fighting fires, one of the captains on the Belvidere Fire Department decides to hang up his gear.

Captain Jeff Schulte is working his last 24 hour shift. He joined the department when he was 21 years old and spent his entire career in Belvidere.

Schulte says he wore many hats during his 33 years with the department, but he said his favorite part of the job was spending time in the community teaching kids about fire safety.

"Going over to the grocery store when it was across the street and some young boy, about 7 years old came up and said, hey I know you! He tugged on my pants and he said you taught me this, and he did the stop drop and roll right in the aisle. Now that’s been pretty good," Schulte said.

Schlute says the first order of business is to catch up on a lot of housework, and then spend some time traveling around the country.
