Belvidere Business Owner Gets 4 Years In Prison

ROCKFORD (WIFR) – A former Belvidere tax service shop owner has been sentenced to four years in prison for tax fraud. Mario Carrillo, 43, of Poplar Grove pleaded guilty in November 2011 to stealing over $420,000 dollars from the U.S. and his service’s clients.

Carrillo owned and operated “You and Me Tax Service” located on North State Street in Belvidere. The shop owner defrauded his costumers and the United States for five years starting from 2004 by falsely preparing tax returns.

Carrillo would prepare two separate tax returns for each client and hand one to the government and one different one to the client. The returns mailed to the clients would indicate a much smaller return than they actually received and the returns sent to the government would indicate false dependent and credit information. Carrillo would also place the address of his business on the returns sent to the government so any refunds were mailed directly to him.

In total Carrillo defrauded victims out of $422,768. Part of Carrillo’s sentence will be to pay the government and his past clients back in full.
