ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Turnout was a homerun this weekend at Beyer Stadium as the Rockford Starfires hosted the first women’s baseball game there in nearly six decades.
Friends of Beyer Stadium have been working hard to renovate the stadium for this weekend’s tournament. The last team to play at Beyer Stadium was the Rockford Peaches back in 1954. This weekend it's playing host to teams as close as Chicago and as far away as Australia. The stadium renovations aren't done yet, it needs bleachers and other updates, but it's good enough for former Peach Helen Wyatt who played under the name Sis Waddell. She never thought she'd see baseball played at Beyer Stadium again.
"I never believed this was going to happen and we've got a darn good start on it right now and I am so excited. All these teams that come out to play for us, you know, it is just terrific," Wyatt said.
The championship game is at 10am on Monday. The game is free, but the Starfires are collecting canned goods for local food pantries.
