STATELINE (WIFR) – With the hot weather back, an old scam is resurfacing in the Stateline.
We’re talking about asphalt and driveway re-paving scams. The Better Business Bureau has received several complaints this summer which it usually gets around this time every year.
In some cases, people will knock on doors and target the elderly. They’ll either charge more than the agreed upon amount or leave without completing the work.
Dennis Horton with the BBB says we should get everything in writing first and remember the rule of thirds.
"A third down to begin the project, another third halfway through and a third upon completion and after your inspection to make sure the work has been done to your satisfaction,” said Horton.
Horton says we should also be weary of contractors doing door-to-door business. It could mean they’re not local and they’re passing through town to try to scam people. He says we should investigate the company first.
