CHICAGO (AP) -- An Illinois audit is providing details about the $12.3 million that the state's Medicaid program paid for medical care for people who were dead.

Auditor General William Holland released the report Thursday. The Associated Press first reported on the overpayments last month.

The report says 561 individuals were signed up for Medicaid managed care after their deaths. The state paid monthly premiums totaling nearly $7 million for them.

Others had large fee-for-service expenditures after their deaths. One person who died in 1989 had payments of nearly $30,000 for medical services from 2005 through 2013.

The leaders of the agencies involved have said they've recovered more than $7 million in overpayments.

The new report says auditors weren't given documentation so weren't able to verify the funds have been recovered.
