ROCKFORD (WIFR) – An Auburn High School football player is recovering tonight after fire fighters say the teen was sent to the hospital for heat exhaustion, in the middle of a very steamy outdoor practice.
It happened a little after 3:00 this afternoon. The heat index at the time was 101 degrees. We’re told the student was on the freshman team. A coach tells us they were giving the kids breaks every 20 minutes and had plenty of water on the field.
District 205 schools let out early this afternoon because of the heat. We’re told Athletic Director Matt Parker gave Auburn the OK to go ahead with their practice. After the student was taken off the field, practice continued. A trainer from OSF comes to each and every practice to make sure the kids stay safe.
