ROCKFORD (WIFR) – Some possible good news for the Rockford’s workforce. It turns out he city’s unemployment rate was under 10% this April ending the month at 9.9%. The Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) says it's the first time in five years April's unemployment numbers were in the single digits.
Since last April, manufacturing has brought in 2,300 jobs to the area and OSF Saint Anthony added nearly 500.
"We are hiring more physicians, more nurse practitioners, more physician assistants, for our practices which in turn is going to filter down into more support positions,” OSF Human Resource representative Carrie Young said. “That will feed the hospital."
The IDES also says Rockford lost nearly 700 construction jobs in the same time span.
