STATELINE (WIFR) – Another sign that fall is just around the corner, local orchards are getting ready to open and many of them could use a decent crop.
We stopped by Curran’s Orchard, which opens this weekend. We’re told they’ll begin harvesting on Wednesday and are expecting a great haul. That news couldn’t be better after last season’s late frost and devastating drought destroyed most of the apples. In fact, there are so many apples this year that the trees can hardly contain them.
"We are back to normal! There are actually apples on the trees this year and not just mine but every orchard in northern Illinois has apples. We are just happy to be back to normal because last year was just catastrophic," said owner Pat Curran.
The above average crop is also great news for the rest of us. Curran’s Orchard says they plan on actually lowering their prices to levels not seen in nearly 5 years.
