Aldermen Expect Rockford Property Tax Levy to Remain Flat

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The Rockford City Council doesn’t plan to ask us to pay more in property taxes next year, but we still might have to anyway.

On Monday, aldermen took a first look at the property tax levy for 2013. The council plans to leave the levy the same as last year. However, because overall property values dropped in the city, homeowners who didn't see a big decrease in their home value may end up paying more than they did last year. Homeowners can expect to shell out $3.04 for every $100 their home is worth.

City leaders expect to collect $52 million in property taxes, which will still leave Rockford with a budget deficit around $1 million.
