Airport Expansion Proposal for Rockford Airport

ROCKFORD (WIFR) – While most airports across the country are cutting back, leaders at Rockford’s Airport are thinking about getting bigger.

“Accessibility of the flights and they are usually not at the times or days that we would like them. We wish we could use it more.”
As a frequent flyer, Cindy Day and other passengers could soon see these problems fly away. A multi-million dollar terminal expansion is expected to break ground next year, replacing what’s stood here for more than two decades.

“It’s accommodating passengers through the TSA program, the check in process, and getting passengers through the baggage claim,” said Mike Dunn.
The terminal expansion will be designed to fit more passengers considering the airport is expecting a 15% increase in travelers next year, the near $30 million dollar project would be funded mostly by federal money, money Illinois Congresswoman Cheri Bustos will be fighting for as she took a tour of the airport today in support. She says transportation projects like these are a critical investment to the state.

“You can go north of here and find these terminal expansion projects that reach the hundred million dollar mark. When we are looking at something around the $20 million mark, that is an efficient use of taxpayer dollars,” Bustos said.

The airport is now waiting on funding numbers from the state and federal government to move forward.
Along with Congresswoman Bustos, Illinois Senator Dick Durbin and the FAA support this project.
