ROCKFORD (WIFR)-- It's been just over a year since Rockford was one of 20 communities across the country chosen to receive a 2.4 million dollar grant aimed at helping our local aerospace industry.
NIU Rockford is leading the program locally and this afternoon they gave us an update on their achievements which included a new engineering internship program. Across the country, the partnership surpassed its two year jobs goal of 21 hundred jobs in just one year. Some of those jobs were right here in Rockford and the hope is that trend continues.
"Accelerate job development and product development. We are trying to grow our own work face here. We think the future of Rockford is going to depend on growing our own engineering workforce," NIU Assistant Vice President of Regional Engagement Rockford said.
Nearly 100 local students are graduating in the engineering program this spring. The goal is to strengthen the aerospace engineering programs locally so that Rockford will be able to support and add to it's workforce down the road.
