AARP Hosting Affordable Utility Rates Forum in Rockford

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Rockford-area consumers are invited to join AARP Illinois for a town hall forum meant to help residents fight legislation aimed at raising their utility rates. The forum will be held on Monday, March 25th, from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. at the University of Illinois-Rockford College of Medicine Auditorium, 1601 Parkview Ave.

With a new wave of utility rate increase bills before the General Assembly in Springfield, AARP is reaching out to inform its members and the general public across the state about the legislation, and invite them to take action to keep utility rates as affordable as possible.

“Utility companies have unleashed the attack of the utility rates on Illinois ratepayers,” said AARP Illinois Associate State Director Scott Musser. “AARP is hosting this event to help Rockford residents become better informed about their rights, and join us on our legislative effort to push back on the rate hike bills introduced by electric, natural gas, and water and telephone companies.”

According to a 2012 AARP survey of members in Illinois, 64 percent of the state’s 1.7 million AARP members are concerned about affording their utility services.

The forum is free and open to the public, however, advance registration is requested by calling the AARP events RSVP line toll-free at 1-877-926-8300 or by registering online at Day-of event sign-in begins at 1:15 p.m. and light refreshments will be provided.
