STATELINE (WIFR) – On Monday, most people will have a day off to enjoy themselves with food and parties but first we need to get there. This year, it’s expected that there will be more travelers on the road and in the sky.
AAA believes that in Illinois, there will be 1.9 million people traveling away from their homes this weekend. Local travel agents say that the highest percentage of people scheduling trips in Rockford are heading to the Wisconsin Dells, Milwaukee and Chicago. The Illinois Department of Transportation is making an effort to make traveling a little easier for drivers this weekend. It’s suspending all non-emergency construction beginning Friday at 3:00 p.m. to improve traffic flow so travelers can set their sights on the vacation.
"I think with the more increased communication and the fact that the toll way is realizing people are going to be traveling more this weekend and they're taking that into consideration, it will help ease the stress. I'm confident that once we get there, the pool will supersedes any shortfalls that we might have,” said Memorial Day Traveler, Cindy Cooper.
Gas prices are also making travel easier for Rockford drivers as the average price is .30 less than it was the same time in 2013.
