Auto Strike

JANESVILLE, Wis. (AP) -- Hundreds of employees streamed out of the General Motors plant in Janesville today as the strike deadline passed.

Anita Ahrens works the night shift at the plant. She waited for her husband to walk out this morning. Ahrens says she has no idea how they will pay their mortgage and support their three children during the strike, including one who's in college.

Ahrens burst into tears as the crowd of workers began leaving the plant. She says the union is "die hard," and that they have no choice but to strike.

She's worked for GM for seven years, her husband for 21.

Union workers at General Motors plants nationwide walked off the job as the 10 a.m. deadline passed. GM and the UAW pulled an all-nighter trying to reach a contract agreement.

The UAW hasn't called a nationwide strike during contract negotiations since 1976, when Ford plants were shut down. There were strikes at two GM plants during contract negotiations in 1996.

UAW walks off the job at GM plants

DETROIT (AP) -- General Motors says the United Auto Workers union is on strike against the company.

The word from a GM spokesman comes after the two sides failed to reach a contract agreement by the union's 11 a.m. Eastern time deadline.

The union's national leadership hasn't publicly announced whether a strike has begun. But workers have walked off the job and taken their places in picket lines outside GM plants.

The UAW had extended its contract for nine days after it expired on September 14th. Talks stalled yesterday, reportedly over the union's quest to protect jobs by getting GM to agree that new vehicles would be built in U.S. factories.
