An oil spill in Rockford dumps about 100 gallons into Kent Creek and the sewer system and at this hour crews are trying to make sure it doesn't spread.
When authorities showed up to Free Storage, that's a business on Short Elm Street, a liquid was coming out of the dumpster they concluded it was some kind of oil and the Rockford Fire Department says, "Our biggest HAZMAT concern at this time was catching it in the creek before it got into the whole water system, we've gotten ahead of it and got some booms down there that are compatible with that flood, they should absorb it up and catch it, so everything seems to be under control."
Officials are now saying the chemical was used oil so it's not hazardous to us, however, there's no word yet on whether this was illegal dumping or just an accident.
