Illinois Crime Lab System Improvements

Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich signed three bills that will go into effect January 1 to improve the state's crime lab system.

The first bill will set new deadlines for evidence testing. Any sexual assault evidence collected after the first of the year needs to be analyzed within one year.

The second bill requires Illinois State Police to report the backlog of cases waiting testing to the Legislature and the governor every year.

The third crime lab bill creates an advisory committee that will work on improving policies and procedures for all the labs in the state, and for sexual assault victims, time means everything.

The state is hoping these pieces of legislation will bring criminals to justice more quickly, thereby allowing victims to pick up the pieces of their lives shattered by a vicious assault.
