Local Analysis on Blago's Defense
Blagojevich may never testify after promising to do so over and over again. What that move could mean.

ROCKFORD (WIFR) - The father-son team heading up former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich's defense is split on how next to proceed and if Blagojevich should even take the stand in his corruption trial.
Today we spoke with former assistant state's attorney Chuck Prorok, who's moved into private practice as a defense lawyer, to get his analysis from both sides of the court room.
Here's what Blagojevich said last week when prosecutors rested their case.
null
"Now the process to prove my innocence begins and I will prove my innocence and I will testify."
For months Blagojevich has been asking for his day in court, but after today's proceedings one of his lawyers, Sam Adam Sr. says the defense may rest without the former governor ever taking the stand. His argument? Adam Sr. believes the prosecution did not prove guilt so why risk it.
However Sam Adam Jr. says Blagojevich should take the stand because of all the promises and jurors may question his innocence if he doesn't.
Prorok agrees with both of those arguments but he sides more with Adam Sr.
"If I had Rod Blagojevich as my client I would not put him on the witness stand and have him testify. Based upon his demeanor, the type of person that he is, the extreme ego that he has, he could only damage himself in testifying. He could not help himself."
The ex-governor's legal team says they will be discussing the issues tonight and will make an announcement tomorrow.
There is also the possibility that this is all planned and simply part of the defense's strategy as the jury has probably already heard most of what Blagojevich would say anyway.
So what could happen if he does take the stand? The prosecutors have been particularly aggressive and they could push him into being even more over-the-top than usual during their cross examination. That could hurt his character and he could end up proving part of the argument against him.
