The Census Bureau says a look at three-year averages shows the poverty rate has gone up in Illinois. From 2000 to 2002, 11.2 percent of Illinoisans lived below the poverty line. And the Census Bureau says that number increased to 11.8 percent from 2001 to 2003.
Median household income in Illinois also dropped over the same period, from $45,906 to $45,607.
Nationally, almost 36 million people were living in poverty last year, or 12.5 percent of the population, and the median household income nationwide was $43,318.
