Public Forum on Downtown Development

After nearly a year in the making, a report from an independent task force is released with its opinion on how to make Downtown Rockford a more vibrant and flourishing place.

But once the public had a chance to comb through the report and go beyond the colorful sketches, differences in opinion began to evolve. By the dozens, downtown residents and business owners turned out to voice praise and concerns over the report's findings, which suggest expansion of the Riverfront Museum Campus, changes at the Metro Centre and Davis Park, as well as aesthetic improvements up and down Main Street.

The most heated debate at the forum arose from plans to demolish both the Amerock and Tapco Buildings downtown in order to expand Davis Park. Many in attendance say the Amerock building is too valuable an asset to lose, and could be used for market level housing, among other things.

Another public forum will be held, but the date has yet to be determined.
