Former Mayor Of Rockford, Ben Schleicher, Dies

Right now the Rockford community mourns the loss of former Mayor Ben Schleicher. Ben Schleicher died late Friday at River Bluff nursing home where he lived since last winter. He was 90 years old. Schleicher served as Mayor from 1957 to 1973 and the Whitman street bridge now bears his name. He was first elected mayor as an "all Rockford" party candidate. Later in his career, he ran as a republican. After serving as mayor, Schleicher worked for the Illinois attorney generals office consumer and fraud division.
