As university's across the state continue their fight to fund everyday operations, some local colleges are taking a major hit to their student employment budget.
Right now 269 Rockford College students work for the school. They do everything from lawn maintenance to administrative duties. This year the organization is borrowing money from another fund in an effort to pay for a 36 percent cut in their work study program..This fall the learning institution is expected to get 98- thousand dollars from a federal grant .That's a more than 50 thousand dollar cut in federal funding.
If the college did not take money out of another fund to pay for the program, 40 students would be laid off from their positions.
"Work study" students work 15-20 hours a week the group is paid a little above minimum wage.
