New Federal Overtime Rules Don't Apply in Illinois

State officials here said no to the Bush administration's changes months ago.

The changes to the overtime rules took effect Monday after months of fighting among employers and labor unions. It's still unclear how many people will lose or gain overtime under the new rules.

Illinois became the first state to reject the new overtime rules April 2 after lawmakers and Gov. Blagojevich approved the move.

Officials here feared as many as 375,000 Illinois workers would lose the extra pay under the changes.
