For decades, Freeport area residents checked out books at the old Carnegie Library. The building is closed now but the city wants to make it a historical landmark.
An early nod for that status came down today from the city's historic preservation commission. There is a still a public hearing that must occur as part of the process. That will happen in early October, then final review by the city council.
The goal here is to preserve the state's oldest Carnegie library.
