State Gas Prices Coming Down Despite High Crude Prices

Nicole Niemi of the Aurora-based Triple-A Chicago Motor Club says it's an unusual situation.

The increase in crude oil prices in the spring resulted in a 20-cent jump in retail gasoline prices in Illinois, but refineries have high inventories now, especially of summer-grade gasoline that has to be used up soon and demand is slackening.

According to Triple-A's monthly survey, the average gasoline price in Illinois is $1.90 per gallon. That's down three cents from July, but still 27 cents higher than August of last year.
