The report finds that the number of people who earned teacher certificates increased by nine-percent between 2000 and 2003. There also was a seven-percent increase in enrollment in Illinois teacher training programs between 1999 and 2002.
The number of teachers leaving the field is also stabilizing. Education officials say the number of unfilled teaching positions dropped from 2,600 in 2000 to only about 1,600 last year.
University of Illinois education dean Susan Fowler says students are pursuing careers in education because they know there are job opportunities.
