Baseball Gloves Going to Soldiers

Some area soldiers will soon receive a special shipment of baseball gloves, thanks to the Belvidere community and a Rockford Postal Center.

Belvidere's Angelique Wilks' son is serving in Iraq, and says she heard that the troops were in need of some baseballs and gloves.

The troops wanted to be able to enjoy America's pastime during their down time.

Three weeks ago, Wilks put an ad in the Boone County Shopper asking for donations of baseball gloves. The community responded donating both used and new equipment.

Wilks says she's overwhelmed by the support.

"They have a lot of stress not just the fact that they're working hard to protect other people but to protect themselves so they need an outlet to take some time to relax and take time off for themselves," Wilks said.

The Postal Shoppe at the Edgebrook Center is providing the cost of shipping up to five pounds for families of soldiers in the Rock River Valley.

Wilks says she will take advantage of this for the baseball shipment.
