Tollway Scofflaws

CHICAGO (AP) -- Scofflaws have been cruising through Illinois toll lanes for free, and tollway officials haven't sent out violation notices for almost a year.

Officials at the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority say they stopped mailing violation notices in September because they're switching to a new contractor to handle those notices.

But the free ride will soon end for toll cheaters.

Tollway officials tell the Chicago Tribune they're going to start mailing out notices again later this month. And they're hoping to get back millions of dollars in unpaid tolls and fines.

Authorities say it could take at least a month before the backlog is cleared.

Failing to pay a toll carries a $20 fine per violation.
