Wisconsin's Population Tops 5.5 Million

State Administration Department officials report Tuesday Wisconsin grew by 168,000 residents since the 2000 Census. That's a three percent increase.

The report says the Fox Valley, western counties near the Twin Cities, Dane County and southeastern Wisconsin experienced the largest gains.

The fastest growing city was Hudson, which saw its population increase more than 20 percent.

During the same period, Milwaukee's population declined by about 3,000 people, or about a half-percent.

State statute requires the Department of Administration to deliver population estimates to local officials by August 10 each year.
