Man Sentenced in Absentia for Role in Fatal Crash

Pasillas was sentenced in absentia Wednesday for causing a crash in March of last year in which a 12-year-old girl died.

Officials say the 22-year-old ran through a stop sign in Rockford and slammed into another vehicle.

Twelve-year-old Helen Whelpley was killed in the crash. She was a passenger in a car driven by her mother.

Authorities say Pasillas fled the scene on foot, but was later arrested and charged with failing to report a traffic accident involving a personal injury or death. He subsequently posted bond and fled the area.

He did not show up to any of his court dates and hasn't been seen since.
