The board first met in closed session Tuesday night, then opened up the meeting to the public where they quickly voted to put Thompson on leave. Thompson was not at the meeting. Board President Nancy Kalchbrenner says the board will inform him of its decision Wednesday. The unanimous call from the board is in response to Thompson considering a superintendent position in Naples, Florida. He hasn't told the board if he'll take the job. Because of that, board members feel more comfortable putting him on leave...And replacing him temporarily with Linda Hernandez, who currently works as an assistant superintendent with the district. "Though school doesn't start until August 27th, so much is being done right now. The principals are meeting to kick off school Thursday so we didn't want there to be any concern out there for who to look to right now from everyone in the district and the community," said Board Member Nancy Kalchbrener.
As far as Hernandez, Kalchbrenner says she's a good choice because she was a former superintendent, she's well aware of what's going on in the district and well-known in the community. The board says they will reconsider bringing Thompson back if he decides to stay in Rockford.
