Officials confirmed that a massive 312-year-old oak tree on the corner of North Fifth and Ford Streets has died.
Oregon's superintendent of trees Mike Bowers says oak wilt likely killed the tree. Another possibility is that the roots failed to spread successfully because of the pavement.
Being a landmark, the tree just won't be cut down and turned into firewood. Instead, the plan is for an artist to turn it into a carving representing some historical character.
