Getting Around and Through Chicago Tough This Summer

By  |

Work to add a lane to Interstate 80/94 began this spring, creating big backups on the main east-west artery into Chicago.

Some motorists also use the Chicago Skyway to get between Chicago and Indiana, but that's also under construction and often is narrowed to one lane, and construction began this spring on the Dan Ryan Expressway, which connects the Skyway to downtown Chicago.

All the roadwork has made the summer drive that much worse for commuters, truckers and vacationers.

Transportation officials say they planned it this way. They said it was better to do all $1.2 billion of road work at once than drag out projects over many years.
