Belvidere residents won't have to wait long for shopping at their fingertips. On August 25th, Wal-Mart will open a site at Genoa Road and Highway 20.
Store manager, Jason Farmer, says construction is coming along on the building.
He also says for the size of the community there has been an overwhelming amount of applicants. About three thousand people applied for 350 positions.
After three rounds of interviews and drug tests managers have haired 180 so far.
Farmer says the store should spur the local economy.
"I think it would really boost the local economy because whenever we come into an area we also bring added businesses that come with us," he says. "And all of these lots we hope within a year will be filled up with businesses."
And it is not just Belvidere that will see this economic boost. Alderman Bill Timm says there has been a tentative design for the Wal-Mart slated for Owens Center and Riverside.
The design has gone through the subdivision committee and he expects a city council vote sometime next week. He thinks there will be a groundbreaking ceremony within the next couple of weeks.
Timm also says there has been some preliminary work being done for the proposed Wal-Mart Supercenter on East State Street.
