Loves Park Mayor Darryl Lindberg met with community members today to propose a 5% tax on gas and electric. He says because of the hurting economy, the city has used up all of its reserves.

The city is also down to 72 employees, which Mayor Lindberg says is the bare minimum. Over the past eight years, Loves Park has made a handful of cuts, like its telecommunications and transit services.

"We've cut, we've cut to the bone everything we possibly can without drastically reducing city services," says Mayor Lindberg.

If the city does not pass the utility tax, it's looking at a $1.7 million deficit. Council members will have their first reading on the tax in a couple of weeks.

The taxation should be presented in true form to ALL LP citizens. What can be done without educating the people?

I realize how bad things are right now, but with that being said can we really support more money going out. The utilities right now are high enough what with no competition they can pretty much charge what they want and the city now wants to charge us more to use these same high priced neccesities. The elderly which live on a fixed income right now are having to choose between food, medication and utilities. I want to know when enough is truly ever enough. It used to be the more you make the more they take, now you make a veary meager wage and because of all the taxes you cant even manage to go out for a nice meal without feeling it in your pocket book. The surrounding areas to find a good job its getting harder and harder. If the taxes keep up like this they are going to see poeple moving out of this area and going to live somewhere else that is cheaper. It is going to become a ghost town if something isnt thought up quick to defray all these taxes.
