About fifty of them gathered outside Harlem schools to protest the state's financial situation, which is leading to teacher layoffs and cuts to programs. One parent says her daughter was scared the protest would get her into trouble, so she demonstrated by joining in a sit-in indoors.

She says more parents should stand behind their kids who are concerned about their education.

"I think it's very awesome that the students are standing up for their teachers. I think the parents need to stand more. I don't see any parents here. I've seen a few people wearing pink clothes which was announced on Facebook that we would all be wearing pink in support of the harlem teachers," Leah Morris, Harlem School Dist.

Students are doing more than just protesting, they're writing about it to their state legislators.

I support my daughter, Ashley 100% in her decision to protest. She has a few teachers on the choppong block and is involved in a few of the after school activities that may be cut. To her, it wasnt about getting out of class for a few hours, it was about standing up for what she felt was the right thing to do for her teachers especially. A few teachers were supportive of the protest, and encouraged the students to exercize their right of freedom of speech, and other teachers opposed it. I do believe however, that someone should teach them HOW to protest. They went outside and stood there...nobody knew what to do. I think it was great that the news and radio station were called for this, because it gave my daughter hope, that her voice WILL be heard. One of her teachers had told them it was a waste of time, and that they are just 8th graders and will not be able to make a difference. You guys gave her hope. And for that, I thank you
