Hidden Home Hazards

ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) -- You may be unaware of them, but they can kill you.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued its first list of Top Five Hidden Home Hazards. They include magnets, recalled products, tip-overs, windows and window coverings, and pool and spa drains.

CPSC spokeswoman Julie Vallese says these hazards have caused injuries and even deaths.

Vallese says many toys have tiny but powerful magnets that children can swallow. Two magnets inside the intestine can pinch it, causing it to close or perforate.

The agency advises consumers to check its Web site, cpsc-dot-gov, for recalled products. Also, check for furniture and appliances that can tip over and crush young children, and window drapery and blind cords that can strangle children. And install a Safety Vacuum Release System on pool and spa drains that can create powerful suction and trap a swimmer under water.
