A Belvidere Alderman who faces jail time after getting 4 DUIs in 25 years is getting the chance to stay on the council.
The Belvidere City Council and Alderman Craig Schultz are working on a way to make sure schultz can fulfill his alderman duties while in jail. A state statute says he can still be an alderman while serving his 200 day setnence that starts April 15th. Schultz says he was going through a rough time and has cleaned up. He wants to continue serving his ward and improving the community of belvidere.
"Everybody says, well you're doing so well. It's unfortunate things had to go the way they did and I'm like no, that's the way they had to go or I wouldn't be here." said Schultz.
He says he has recieved an overwhelming amount support from residents over the last year to help him recover.
