23 News financial expert Brad Gummow says we can no longer rely on matching contributions from our employers to beef up our nest egg...We need to do it on our own.
Statistics show we aren't doing a very good job. Gummow says only 10 percent of workers in our area are contributing the maximum amount to their 401-K's .
And 70 percent of us born between 1965-1976 don't have enough saved to retire..So we have a decision to make, save more and quick or plan on working longer.
"What people should put away on a regular basis from the beginning of their careers is 10 percent of their earnings. Average earnings tends to be in the 50,000 range so that would work out to roughly more than 400 dollars a month."
Gummow adds 30 percent of us end up spending all the money from our retirement contributions within 18 months. Increasing the amount we put in each month by as little as 20 dollars could knock off a few years of saving.
