Tough economic times and competition from the west have created a challenging situation for Machesney Park Mall.
But mall owners and managers are hoping a good old bargain will attracts renters and shoppers.
Mall management is hosting three open houses aimed at getting local entrepreneurs to set up shop at Machesney Park Mall.
Empty parking spaces and vacant stores have plagued Machesney Park Mall for months now, and current tenants are ready for change.
A a new management approach is underway this week. Its goal, to fill the mall with vendors; the strategy, low rent and little commitment.
"Having anybody else come in here of course we'll all benefit and the community as well. More traffic, more exposure. It's just a win-win,” says Cricket Masterson of Texas Grill.
Mall management is hoping to get business buzzing by offering 18 vacant spaces for $5 per square foot per month and cart leases for $100 a month.
“It's very attractive. It makes it very flexible for people to come in who might be concerned about getting started,” says Masterson.
Mall officials would not comment on camera but say interest is high which is good news to other tenants.
We didn't catch up with anyone who was considering taking advantage of the deal, but mall operators say they've seen good response when they've tried this at other properties.
The offer ends on Wednesday at 9 p.m.
