It is all about Rockford's tax dollars, Rockford's kids, and Rockford's jobs and right now District 205's budget relies on all seven of it's unions to take a pay freeze to survive the 2010 school year and a vote tonight could get that process started.
The Rockford School Board will to discuss its contracts with teachers union contract.. as you may know.. nearly a thousand teachers met in a closed door meeting at Guilford High School over the weekend.
Now the teachers union contract is not up for a vote tonight however Local 3210 is that's the union representing food service workers. The way the district's budget is set for the next school year it relies on every union to accept a wage freeze part of this financial dilemma comes from money owed by the state. In fact, Springfield owes more than $9 million dollars and this is the major source of these growing money problems. Para- professionals actually signed a similar contract last month it's now up to the rest of the unions to follow suit in order for the district's budget to stay on track.
Teachers Union President, Molly Phalen is expected to attend tonight's meeting.. we were told she will release information about the weekend meeting and this may include the putting union members on a wage freeze. We will have more information on this on the 23 News Update at 10.
