Illinois Nursing Homes Being Fined More Often

By  |

Department of Public Health figures show the state fined 100 facilities a total of $955,000 last year. That's up from 56 facilities and almost $442,000 the year before.

Industry officials say the stiffer fines have placed a financial burden on some nursing homes. They say the fines don't necessarily improve care of the elderly.

Health Department spokeswoman Tammy Leonard says the increased enforcement is due in part to the state working with advocacy groups to revise fine amounts. She says the goal is to get poorly performing homes in line with regulations.
