Students Give School Custodian Trip To San Francisco

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- A North Carolina man's lifelong dream to see the Golden Gate Bridge came true this week, thanks to students at a Raleigh elementary school.

When fifth-graders at Mangum Elementary School heard their custodian had always wanted to see the San Francisco icon, they raised about two-thousand dollars for a trip.

That was just the beginning.

Word of Joe Venable's dream spread and donations started pouring in from across the country. The 71-year-old and his wife wound up with 35-hundred dollars for meals, activities and spending money.

The San Francisco mayor's office arranged the couple's itinerary, and a bridge supervisor offered a personal tour.

Hilton Hotels threw in a couple of extra nights, extending the trip from three days to five.
