Census Bureau: Aurora, Joliet Among Nation's Fastest-Growing

Aurora and Joliet are two northern Illinois cities located about 20 miles apart. The Census Bureau says Joliet is the 11th and Aurora is the 14th fastest growing large city in the country.

Since 2000, Joliet has added almost 17,000 people, an increase of about 16 percent. The total population in Joliet is about 123,500.

Aurora has added more than 19,000 people during that period, an increase of 13.3 percent. The total population in Aurora is 162,184.

Eight of the nation's top ten fastest-growing large cities since 2000 are in the western United States. Cities in Arizona, Nevada and California saw the biggest gains.

A large city is one with a population of more than 100,000 people.
