This year, the department plans to spray about 18,000 acres across northern Illinois with pheromone flakes.
The flakes simulate the scent of female moths, which confuses male moths and serves as a sort of birth control method.
Officials say the flakes will be dropped over sites in Cook, DuPage, Will, Kane, Carroll and Winnebago Counties.
Program Coordinator Jim Cavanaugh says the treated flakes aren't harmful to humans or other mammals.
