Durbin Upset with Lack of Leadership on Illinois Budget

Durbin, the second-highest-ranking Democrat in the U-S Senate, says Congress has passed a record amount of federal transportation money for Illinois. But the state gets the funds only if it provides some money of its own.

He says the state budget deadlock is holding up that money and could keep important projects in Illinois from going forward.

In an interview today with The Associated Press, Durbin said he recently warned some legislators that they must approve the state construction money.

Durbin also says he won't play any role in settling the state budget. He joked that he would rather mediate in Iraq than get in the middle of the Springfield disputes.
