The county board voted overwhelmingly to place a sales tax referendum on the November ballot asking for money to build a new jail complex.
The vote was 27-1. If voters approve the referendum, it would increase the county sales tax by 1 percent. Food medicine and vehicle purchases would be exempt from the tax increase. County board members say the overcrowding issue must be addressed and asking their voters to be a part of the process is the right thing to do.
Jail tax referendums were defeated in 1993 anfd1996.
